This paper derives an explicit formula for the Hirzebruch-Mumford volume of an indefinite lattice \(L\) of rank \(\geq 3\). Let \(O(L)\) denote the group of isometries of \(L\). Then the main formula for the Hirzebruch-Mumford volume is \[ \text{{vol}}_{HM}(O(L))={{2}\over{{g_{sp}^+}}}| \text{det}(L)| ^{(\rho+1)/2} \prod_{k=1}^{\rho} \pi^{-k/2}\Gamma(k/2)\prod_p\alpha_p(L)^{-1} \] where \(\alpha_p(L)\) is the local density of \(L\) over the \(p\)-adic integers, and \(g_{sp}^+\) is the number of the proper spinor genera in the genus of \(L\). Applications of this formula are considered for lattices and groups related to moduli problems. For instance, if \(\Gamma\subset O(L)\) is an arithmetic subgroup and \(L\) has signature \((2,n)\), then by applying Hirzebruch-Mumford proportionality, the leading term of the growth of the dimension of the spaces \(S_k(\Gamma)\) of cusp forms of weight \(k\) as \(k\to\infty\) is obtained. The Hirzebruch-Mumford volume is calculated for a number of specific groups. This includes an arithmetic subgroup of \(O(L)\) of a lattice of signature \((2,n)\,(n\geq 1)\) containing at least one hyperbolic plane, the even unimodular lattices \(II_{2,8m+2}\), the lattices \(T_{2,8m+2}\), the lattices \(L_{2d}^{(m)}=2U\oplus mE_8(-1)\oplus\langle-2d\rangle,\) lattices associated to Heegner divisors, among others. For these groups, the leading term of the dimension of the spaces of cusp forms of weight \(k\) is computed as \(k\to \infty\).
