The general monotone equilibrium problem involving a monotone differentiable bifunction in a real Hilbert space is considered together with establishing a skew-symmetric type property with respect to partial gradients. The modified combined relaxation method [see, e.g., \textit{I. V. Konnov}, J. Optim. Theory Appl. 111, No. 2, 327--340 (2001; Zbl 1022.49005)] involving the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the auxiliary variational inequality in an auxiliary procedure is proposed. The weak convergence of the method is established on basis of the monotonicity and the skew-symmetric type property.
