The aim of the paper under review is to continue to explore the extensions of valuations as initiated by the author in [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 359, No. 7, 3439--3481 (2007; Zbl 1121.13005)]. Let \(\nu\) be a valuation on a field \(K\), to any valuation \(\mu\), extension of \(\nu\) to the ring of polynomials \(K[x]\), it is associated in \([V]\), a family of valuations, called admissible family \({\mathcal A}\). In this paper the author introduces several invariants, \(s^{\text{tot}}({\mathcal A})\in {\mathbb Q}\) named the total jumping in \({\mathcal A}\), \(e(\mu/\nu)\) the residual degree and \(f(\mu/\nu)\) the ramification index. In the case of an extension \((L=K[x]/(G),\mu)\) of \((K,\nu)\), where \(G\) is an irreducible polynomial he gets the following formula: \[ [L:K]= e(\mu/\nu)f(\mu/\nu)s^{\text{tot}}({\mathcal A}), \] and the author defines the defect of the extension by the relation \[ d(L/K)=[L:K]/\sum_{i=1}^g e(\mu_i/\nu)f(\mu_i/\nu). \] The author gives some properties of the invariants introduced below, two interesting examples are considered.
