Let \(\mathfrak g\) be a reductive Lie algebra of rank \(l\) over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and let \(\mathfrak g_e\) be the centralizer of a nilpotent element \(e\in\mathfrak g\). There is a conjecture due to Premet that for any \(e\in N(\mathfrak g)\), the invariant algebra \(S(\mathfrak g_e)^{\mathfrak g_e}\) is a graded polynomial algebra in \(l\) variables. This conjecture is closely related to Elashvili's conjecture which states that for any \(x\in g\), the index of the stabilizer \(\mathfrak g_x\) is equal to the rank of \(\mathfrak g\). In the present paper, Premet's conjecture is proved for all nilpotent elements in the Lie algebras of type \(\mathbf A\) and \(\mathbf C\). It is also shown that this conjecture continues to hold for \textit{some} nilpotent elements in the reductive Lie algebras of other types. Moreover, for \(\mathfrak g=\mathfrak{gl}_n\), the authors prove that the invariant algebra \(S(\mathfrak g_e)^{\mathfrak g_e}\) is freely generated by a regular sequence in \(S(\mathfrak g_e)\), and provide a description of the tangent cone to the nilponent variety of \(\mathfrak g\) at a given point. The proofs are based on some geometric properties of Poisson algebras of Slodowy slices.
