The growth rank of a \(C^*\)-algebra \(A\) is defined to be the least positive integer \(n\) such that the \(n\)-fold minimal tensor product \(A^{\otimes n}\) of \(A\) absorbs tensorially the Jiang--Su algebra \(\mathcal Z\) (i.e., \(A^{\otimes n} \otimes \mathcal Z \cong A^{\otimes n}\), called \(\mathcal Z\)-stable), where \(\mathcal Z\) is a simple unital nuclear, infinite dimensional \(C^*\)-algebra that is KK-equivalent to \(\mathbb C\). If no such \(n\) exists, set the rank \(\infty\). The author also introduces the topological dimension growth for an unital AH-algebra \(B\) (i.e., an inductive limit of homogeneous \(C^*\)-algebras), that is defined to be the least positive integer \(n\) such that \(B^{\otimes n}\) has slow dimension growth (i.e., the limit of the dimension of the spectrums of \(n_j\)-homogeneous \(C^*\)-subalgebras of \(B^{\otimes n}\) divided by \(n_j\) is zero). If there is no such \(n\), set the growth \(\infty\). It is shown, among other results, that there exists a simple nuclear non-type I \(C^*\)-algebra with both topological dimension growth and growth rank \(n\), a given positive integer, or \(\infty\) [cf.\ \textit{M.\,Rørdam}, Acta Math.\ 191, 109--142 (2003; Zbl 1072.46036) and \textit{J.\,Villadsen}, J.~Am.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 12, 1091--1102 (1999; Zbl 0937.46052)]. Furthermore, the paper discusses tensor factorisation, infinite tensor products and their growth rank, and comparison with other ranks for \(C^*\)-algebras.
