The authors investigate the doubly nonlinear Volterra initial value problem \[ Au'+ Bu+ k* Bu\ni f,\tag{1} \] \[ u(0)= u_0.\tag{2} \] It is assumed that \(V\) and \(H\) are reflexive Banach spaces with \(V\subset H\) and \(A: H\to H^*\), \(B: V\to V^*\) are maximal monotone operators, \(k\in BV(0, T)\), \(u_0\in V\) and \(f: [0,T]\to V^*\). Under suitable assumptions it is shown that problem (1)--(2) has a global strong solution. In the proof the authors use an implicit time-discretization procedure.
