Following M. Matveev a topological space \(X\) is called monotonically Lindelöf if there is an operator assigning to every open cover \({\mathcal U}\) of \(X\) a countable open cover \(r({\mathcal U})\) refining \({\mathcal U}\) in such a way that \(r({\mathcal V})\) refines \(r({\mathcal U})\) whenever \({\mathcal V}\) refines \({\mathcal U}\). In [Topology Appl. 151, No. 1--3, 180--186 (2005; Zbl 1069.54021)], \textit{H. Bennett}, \textit{D. Lutzer} and \textit{M. Matveev} have studied this property in the realm of generalized ordered spaces. Here it is related to some other well-known constructions of topological spaces. For example, if \(B\) is a subset of a topological space \((X,\tau)\), then \(\tau\cup\{\{x\}\mid x\in X\setminus B\}\) is a base for another topology \(\tau_B\) on \(X\). Theorem 1. If \(\tau\) is the Euclidean topology on \(\mathbb{R}\), and \(B\subset\mathbb{R}\) is a Bernstein set, then \((\mathbb{R},\tau_B)\) is a monotonically Lindelöf space such that \((\mathbb{R},\tau_B)\times(\mathbb{R}, \tau_B)\) is Lindelöf but not monotonically Lindelöf. Theorem 2. The product of \((\mathbb{R},\tau_B)\) and the one point Lindelöfication of the discrete space of cardinality \(\omega_1\) is monotonically Lindelöf. Theorem 3. If \(\tau_\leq\) is the topology on \(\mathbb{R}\times 3\) induced by the lexicographic order, then \((\mathbb{R}\times 3,\tau_\leq)\times(\omega+ 1)\) is monotonically Lindelöf. Theorem 4. (CH) For every \(n\) and every uncountable subset \(Y\) of the Sorgenfrey line there exists an uncountable \(X\subset Y\) such that \(X^n\) is monotonically Lindelöf. Theorem 5. The space \(C_p(X)\) of continuous functions on \(X\) with the topology of pointwise convergence is monotonically Lindelöf iff \(X\) is countable. Theorem 6. \(\beta\omega\setminus\omega\) (and consequently \(\beta\omega\)) is not monotonically Lindelöf.
