Sufficient conditions are established for the zero solution of the following nonlinear difference equation with variable coefficients: \[ \begin{aligned} &x_{n+1}=x_n-\sum^m_{j=0}a_j(n)f_j(x_{n-j}),\quad n=0,1,2,\dots,\\ &x_j=x(j),\quad -m\leq j\leq 0,\\ &a_j (n)\geq 0,\;0\leq j\leq m,\;\sum^m_{j=0}a_j(n)>0,\;\sum^\infty_{n=0}\sum^m_{j=0} a_j(n)-+\infty;\end{aligned} \] in order to be globally asymptotically stable. The ``3/2 criteria'' type stability conditions are improved applying the above result to some special cases.
