Let \(X\) be a Banach function space (in the sense of Luxemburg) over \((0,\infty)\) with Lebesgue measure. \textit{E.\,Lomakina} and \textit{V.\,Stepanov} [Publ.\ Mat., Barc.\ 42, No.\,1, 165--194 (1998; Zbl 0923.46029)] found a criterion for the boundedness of the Hardy operator \((Hf)(x):=\int_0^xf(t)\,dt\) between general Banach function spaces. Their result is not suitable for the study of the limiting case, the geometric mean operator given by \((Gf)(x)=\exp\left({1\over x}\int_0^x\ln f(t)\,dt\right)\). For \(p\geq 0\), let \(X^p\) be the space of all measurable functions \(f\) such that \(\| f\| _{X^p}:=\| \,| f| ^p\| _X^{1/p}<\infty\). First, the authors find another necessary and sufficient condition on weight functions \(u\) and \(v\) for \(\| Hf\cdot u^{1/q}\| _{X^q}\leq C\left(\int_0^\infty f^p(x)v(x)\,dx\right)^{1/p}\). Since the Köthe dual for \(X^p\) is not known, in general, one cannot employ duality arguments to the study of the boundedness of the formal adjoint of \(H\) given by \((H^*f)(x):=\int_x^\infty f(t)\,dt\). Secondly, the authors provide a direct proof of necessary and sufficient conditions on weight functions \(u\) and \(v\) for \(\| H^*f\cdot u^{1/q}\| _{X^q}\leq C\left(\int_0^\infty f^p(x)v(x)\,dx\right)^{1/p}\). Finally, applying their result on the boundedness of \(H\) and a limiting procedure, the authors find some necessary and sufficient conditions on weight functions \(u\) and \(v\) for \(\| Gf\cdot u^{1/q}\| _{X^q}\leq C\left(\int_0^\infty f^p(x)v(x)\,dx\right)^{1/p}\).
