Using the representative functions of the operators involved, the authors establish some sufficient conditions for the maximal monotonicity of the operator \(S+A^*TA\), where \(S:X \rightrightarrows X^*\), \(T:Y \rightrightarrows Y^*\) are two maximal monotone operators, \(A:X\to Y\) is a linear continuous mapping, and \(X\), \(Y\) are reflexive Banach spaces. The conditions are weaker than those which have been given by the authors before [cf. SIAM J.~Optim. 17, No. 4, 1239--1252 (2007; Zbl 1133.47038); Numer. Funct. Anal. Optimization 28, No. 1--2, 27--41 (2007; Zbl 1119.47051)]. In particular, they re-obtain known sufficient conditions by using the Fitzpatrick function for the maximal monotonicity of the sum of two maximal monotone operators and for the precomposition of a maximal monotone operator with a linear operator.
