    The theory of ideals and algebraic number theory was developed in Germany in the nineteenth century. The connection to elliptic integrals goes through the formula \[ \frac{K(k')}{K(k)}=\sqrt{\lambda},\;\lambda\in\mathbb{N}. \] As a preparation for the definition of \(\eta(z)\) some infinite \(q\)-shifted factorials are given, the formula 2.6 is due to Euler. For the definition of class group on p.~1639, the reader is referred to [\textit{H. Muzaffar} and \textit{K. S. Williams}, JP J. Algebra Number Theory Appl. 4, No. 2, 209--259 (2004; Zbl 1077.11031), p. 212]. The main result is a formula \(\star\) on page 1641 for the Dedekind eta function expressed in terms of gamma functions to the power of Kronecker symbols. This idea goes back to \textit{R. Fricke} [IElliptische Funktionen. Enzyklop. d. math. Wiss. II 2, 177--348 (1913; JFM 44.0521.09)]. However the proof of \(\star\) is only hinted at. With the help of \(\star\), similar formulas for \(K[\sqrt{\lambda}]\) are obtained. The investigation continues with Dirichlet \(L\)-series and the Dedekind zeta function, certain functions expressing these functions depending on the Legendre symbol are used in the computations.
