The authors consider the generalized Boussinesq equation \[ \begin{gathered} \partial^2_t u_1 -\Delta u_1 + \Delta^2 u_1 =\Delta f_1(u_1) \;\;\;\text{ in } \mathbb R\times \mathbb R^n \\ u_1(0,x) = \varphi_1(x) , \;\;\partial_t u_1(0,x) = \psi_1(x) \end{gathered} \] and the improved modified Boussinesq equation \[ \begin{gathered} \partial^2_t u_2 -\Delta u_2 - \Delta\partial^2_t u_2 =\Delta f_2(u_2) \;\;\;\text{ in } \mathbb R\times \mathbb R^n \\ u_2(0,x) = \varphi_2(x) , \;\;\partial_t u_2(0,x) = \psi_2(x) \end{gathered} \] with \(f_i\) smooth, \(| f_i(v)| \sim | v_i| ^{p_i}\). Under the assumption that the initial condition is sufficiently small in certain Sobolev and Besov (homogeneous Besov) spaces, they prove global solvability of the problem which extends the known results to a larger class of \(p_i\)'s, depending on the dimension \(n\). Moreover, the rate of the decay of the solutions for \(t\to \pm \infty\) is also proved. Another result concerns small data scattering, i.e. the rate of the decay for time tending to \(\pm \infty\) of the difference of the solution to one of the equations above and a solution to the corresponding equation with zero right hand-side with suitable initial condition. The final section shows the non-existence of asymptotically free solutions, i.e. assuming that \(f_i(u_i)u_i \geq c| u_i| ^{p_i+1}\) together with certain technical assumptions on the data and regularity of the solution, the solution is identically zero provided the difference of the solution to the nonlinear problem and the corresponding linear problem (with \(f_i=0\)) decays to zero for \(t\to \pm \infty\).
