The author generalizes the notion of a classical holomorphic modular form of half-integral weight to rings other than \(\mathbb C\). He gives such a (geometric) theory using modular curves. For any positive integers \(N\) and \(k\), and for a \(\mathbb Z[{1\over N}]\)-algebra \(R\) he defines the space \(M_{k/2}(4N,R)\) as \(\theta^k\) times the set of rational functions on \(X_1(4N)_R\) with divisor bounded below by the negative of a certain explicit \(\mathbb Q\)-divisor \(\Sigma_{4N,k}\) on \(X_1(4N)\). He also gives a geometric construction of Hecke operators in this situation. In the last two sections he defines a Banach space of \(p\)-adic modular forms of half-integral weight equipped with a completely continuous operator \(U_{p^2}\). This aspect of this article is further discussed in the author's follow-up paper [Algebra Number Theory 2, No. 7, 755--808 (2008; Zbl 1191.11011)].
