Given a pointed simplicial space \(X\), \textit{A. K. Bousfield} and \textit{E. M. Friedlander} [Geom. Appl. Homotopy Theory, II, Proc. Conf., Evanston 1977, Lect. Notes Math. 658, 80--130 (1978; Zbl 0405.55021)] constructed a first-quadrant homotopy spectral sequence with \(E^2_{s,t}(X)\cong \pi_s (\pi_t X)\), which converges strongly to \(\pi_{s+t}(\text{diag}(X))\) where \(\text{diag}(X)\) is the diagonal of \(X\). In the article under review the author shows using the machinery of Bousfield-Kan [\textit{A. K. Bousfield} and \textit{D. M. Kan}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 177, 305--318 (1973; Zbl 0259.55010)] that there exists an induced smash paring for this homotopy spectral sequence. This is achieved by giving a reformulation of the spectral sequence in terms of differential relations on the normalized homotopy of the simplicial space \(X\). The author also compares the homotopy spectral sequence with the Dwyer-Kan-Stover spectral sequence derived from a spiral exact sequence [\textit{W. G. Dwyer, D. M. Kan} and \textit{C. R. Stover}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 103, No.~2, 167--188 (1995; Zbl 0860.55014)].
