The paper is a continuation of earlier papers by the authors devoted to the construction of Markov processes on ultra-metric spaces. Their approach is to construct first an appropriate random walk on a discrete set of metric balls, and then, by a limiting procedure, to obtain a process on the space itself. In an earlier paper [Expo. Math. 22, No. 3, 197--211 (2004; Zbl 1151.60303)] the authors considered general locally compact ultra-metric spaces with sufficiently many isometries and got a class of isotropic diffusions. The paper under review deals with totally disconnected locally compact Abelian groups. This is a more special case, in which additional structures are available (an ultrametric is associated with a double chain of compact open subgroups), and that makes it possible to construct anisotropic diffusions including processes of stable type.
