Using the decomposition method of Z. Ciesielski and T. Fiegel, the authors construct biorthogonal multiresolution analyses on a compact Riemannian manifold \(M\) of dimension \(n\). The central problem is to construct extension operators, which are straightforward, relatively simple and are adapted to the scale. The construction is adapted to the study of Sobolev spaces \(H^1 (M)\) and \(H^1_0 (M)\). The scaling functions and the associated wavelets have compact support and are obtained from a finite number of basic functions.
