The book under review is the ``Habilitationsschrift'' by the author. It introduces an affine density of sequences in the time-frequency plane as a tool for construction of irregular wavelet frames, i.e., frames for \(L^2(\mathbb{R})\) of the form \(\{a^{-1/2}\psi(a^{-1}x-b)\}_{(a,b)\in \Lambda}\) for some function \(\psi\in L^2(\mathbb{R})\) and a sequence \(\Lambda\subset \mathbb{R}^+\times \mathbb{R}\). Chapter 1 gives an introduction to the research area and states the main new results. Chapter 2 states some basic results in frame theory and time-frequency analysis. The new contributions begin in Chapter 3, where the central notion of weighted upper and lower affine densities (for multiple weighted sequences) is introduced. The notion of weighted affine density is an extension of a previous definition by Kutyniok and Heil. The relationship to the affine density by Sun and Zhou is analyzed. Chapter 4 relates the weighted affine densities to frame properties for irregular wavelet systems. Furthermore, the local integrability condition (LIC) by Hernandez, Labate and Weiss is shown essentially to be equivalent to a density condition. In Chapter 5 a fundamental relationship between the affine weighted density, the frame bounds, and the admissibility constants for the analyzing wavelets is derived. In particular, the results imply that the affine density of a tight wavelet frame has to be uniform. Chapter 6 discusses the homogeneous approximation property (HAP) for wavelet frames, a property which was originally introduced by Ramanathan and Steger, and later considered for Gabor systems by Deng, Christensen, and Heil. Finally, Chapter 7 analyzes Gabor systems using the notion of weighted Beurling density. For weighted Gabor frames, a relationship between the weighted Beurling density of the sequence of time-frequency shifts, the frame bounds, and the norm of the generators is derived.
