Let \(R\) be a semiprime ring with center \(Z(R)\), nonzero left ideal \(U\), \([x,y]=xy-yx\) for \(x,y\in R\), and \((F,d)\) a nonzero generalized derivation of \(R\). That is, \(d\in\text{Der}(R)\) and \(F\colon R\to R\) is a nonzero additive map so that \(F(xy)=F(x)y+xd(y)\) for all \(x,y\in R\). The authors recall and generalize here to the case of the left ideal \(U\), several results in the literature that assume special properties of \(F\) acting on an ideal of \(R\). All of the main results in this paper assume that \(d(U)\neq 0\), that \(F\) satisfies some special property when acting on \(U\), and conclude that \(R\) contains a nonzero central ideal. The specific properties considered are the following, where \(x,y\in U\): i) \(F([x,y])=0\), unless \(Ud(U)=0\), ii) \(R\) is 2-torsion free and \(F(xy)\in Z(R)\), unless \(F(U)U=UF(U)=Ud(U)=0\); iii) \(F([x,y])\in Z(R)\), unless \(d(Z(R))U=0\) or \(Ud(U)=0\); iv) \(F(xy)+yx\in Z(R)\) for all \(x,y\in U\) or \(F(xy)-yx\in Z(R)\); v) \(F(xy)+[x,y]\in Z(R)\) for all \(x,y\in U\) or \(F(xy)-[x,y]\in Z(R)\).
