This research is motivated by the work of \textit{J. Vukman} and \textit{I. Kosi-Ulbl}, [see Taiwanese J. Math. 11, No. 4, 1063-1074 (2007; Zbl 1181.46039)]. An additive mapping \(T\colon R\to R\), where \(R\) is an arbitrary associative ring, is called a left centralizer if \(T(xy)=T(x)y\) holds for all pairs \(x,y\in R\). If \(R\) has an identity element, \(T\colon R\to R\) is a left centralizer iff \(T\) is of the form \(T(x)=ax\), \(x\in R\), where \(a\in R\) is some fixed element. For a semiprime ring \(R\), all left centralizers are of the form \(T(x)=qx\), \(x\in R\), where \(q\) is some fixed element in the Martindale right quotient ring \(Q_r\). The concept of right centralizer can be defined similarly. If a mapping \(T\colon R\to R\) is both a left and a right centralizer, then it is called a two-sided centralizer. If \(T\colon R\to R\) is a two-sided centralizer, where \(R\) is a semiprime ring, then \(T\) is of the form \(T(x)=\lambda x\), \(x\in R\), where \(\lambda\) is some fixed element in the extended centroid \(C\) of \(R\). In [op. cit.] one can find the following conjecture: Let \(R\) be a semiprime ring with suitable torsion restrictions and let \(T\colon R\to R\) be an additive mapping satisfying the relation \(2T(x^{m+n+1})=x^mT(x)x^n+x^nT(x)x^m\) for all \(x\in R\). In this case \(T\) is a two-sided centralizer. The main aim of the paper under review is to prove the following result. Let \(m\geq 0\) and \(n\geq 0\) be fixed integers with \(m+n\neq 0\) and let \(R\) be a prime ring with \(\text{char}(R)=0\) or \(m+n+1\leq\text{char}(R)\neq 2\). Suppose \(T\colon R\to R\) is an additive mapping satisfying the relation \(2T(x^{m+n+1})=x^mT(x)x^n+x^nT(x)x^m\) for all \(x\in R\). In this case \(T\) is a two-sided centralizer.
