In this paper the variety generated by given algebra is considered as a category and two algebras \(A\) and \(B\) are called categorically equivalent if the corresponding varieties generated by \(A\) and \(B\), respectively, are equivalent. It is proved that two finite algebras are categorically equivalent if and only if the matrix products of their irredundant non-refinable covers are isomorphic. Also the families of irreducible algebras which have at least one matrix product are characterized.
