The main result of this paper is that given a closed hyperbolic 3--manifold \(M\), for every \(\epsilon > 0\), if its 1--systole \(\text{sys}_1(M)\) (= the length of the shortest closed geodesic in \(M\)) is sufficiently large, then the genus of any \(\pi_1\)--injective surface in \(M\) is bounded below by \(\exp(( { 1 \over 2} - \epsilon) \text{sys}_1(M))\). The author applies this result to obtain some asymptotic inequalities for sequences of congruence covers \(M_i \rightarrow M\) when \(M\) is a closed arithmetic hyperbolic 3--manifold. The inequalities relate various invariants of \(M_i\) such as its volume, 1-systole, Heegard genus, systolic genus (= least genus of a \(\pi_1\)--injective surface) and 2-systole (= minimum area of a \(\pi_1\)--injective surface of positive genus). In the final section of the paper, the author address how these results might be generalized to higher dimensions.
