For a Borel measurable map \(T: X \rightarrow X\) preserving a Borel probability measure \(\mu\), this paper introduces and examines three measurable functions which are gauges for the dynamical properties of recurrence, connectivity, and proximality. The results are then applied to interval exchange transformations (IETs). For example, the authors prove that no 3-IET is strongly topologically mixing. They also define the concept of \(\tau\)-entropy of an IET to get an upper bound on the proximality constant of an IET.
