Let \(F\) be a field of characteristic zero or odd prime characteristic \(p\), \(G\) a group, \(FG\) the group algebra. The authors continue their research on the properties of symmetric and skew-symmetric elements of \(FG\) with respect to an algebra involution \(*\) induced by an involution on the group, communicated in a series of papers, recent ones include [J. Algebra 321, No. 3, 890-902 (2009; Zbl 1169.16014); J. Group Theory 13, No. 2, 221-231 (2010; Zbl 1193.16020)]. The main result of the present paper is as follows: let \(G\) have no 2-torsion and no dihedral group involved; the Lie-algebra of skew-symmetric elements is nilpotent if and only if either \(FG\) is Lie-nilpotent, or the characteristic is \(p\) and the set of \(p\)-elements \(P\) is a subgroup, \(*\) is trivial on \(G/P\) and there exist normal \(*\)-invariant subgroups \(A\leq B\) with \(B\) finite central \(p\)-torsion, \(A/B\) central in \(G/B\) and both \(G/A\) and \(\{a\in A\mid aa^*\in B\}\) finite. The proof uses a result of \textit{O. Broche Cristo, E. Jespers, C. Polcino Milies} and \textit{M. Ruiz Marín} [J. Algebra Appl. 8, No. 1, 115-127 (2009; Zbl 1192.16023)].
