Let \(X\) be a homotopy associative mod \(p\) \(H\)-space, of finite type, for \(p\) an odd prime. The associative ring \(H_*(X;{\mathbf F}_p)\) is not commutative in general and the author studies when \([\overline{x},\overline{y}]\neq 0\) implies \(ad^l(\overline{x})(\overline{y})\neq 0\), for \(l\leq p-1\), \(\overline{x}\), \(\overline{y}\) in \(H_*(X;{\mathbf F}_p)\) and \(\overline{y}\neq \overline{x}Q_{j+1}\) where \(Q_{j+1}\) is the Milnor operation. He gives sufficient conditions involving the action of the Steenrod algebra. From that, the author shows how one can recover previous results of Hamanaka, Hara, Kono, Kozima, Nishimura and he extends a theorem of \textit{R. Kane} [Ill. J. Math. 20, 476--485 (1976; Zbl 0321.55028)] to nonfinite mod \(p\) homotopy associative \(H\)-spaces. Explicit examples of non homotopy associative \(H\) spaces are deduced also.
