The paper deals with the existence of solitary-wave solutions, \((\eta(x,t),u(x,t))= (\eta(x-\omega t),u(x-\omega t))\), where \(\eta\) is the deviation of free surface with respect to the undisturbed state, \(u\) is the dimensionless horizontal velocity at a given height and \(\omega\) denotes the speed of wave, to an initial-value problem for the Boussinesq system in the dimensionless form \[ \begin{aligned}\eta_t+u_x+(\eta u)_x+a u_{xxx}-b\eta_{xxt}&=0,\\ u_t+\eta_x+uu_x+c \eta_{xxx}-bu_{xxt}&=0, \end{aligned} \] with \(b>0\) and \(a,c<0\) satisfying \(ac>b^2\). For sufficiently small \(\mu_0\) and for any \(r\in]0,\min\{1,-a\}/2[\) and \(\mu\in]0,\min\{\mu_0,r^2\min\{ 1,-c\}/16\}[\), the solutions \((\eta,u)\in H^2(\mathbb R)\times H^1(\mathbb R)\) are obtained such that \(\|\eta\|_{ H^2(\mathbb R)}\leq r\) as minimizers of \({\mathcal H}(\eta,u)\) under the constraint \({\mathcal I}(\eta,u)=2\mu\), with the Hamiltonian \[ {\mathcal H}(\eta,u)= \frac12\int_{-\infty}^{+\infty} \big(-c\eta_x^2-au_x^2+\eta^2+ (1+\eta) u^2\big)\,dx, \] and the momentum functional \[ {\mathcal I}(\eta,u)= \int_{-\infty}^{+\infty}(b\eta_xu_x+\eta u)\,dx. \] Moreover, it is proved that the set of minimizers is stable with respect to the initial wave profile of \(( H^2(\mathbb R))^2\).
