The author studies noncommutative analogs of Beurling algebras. For a separable and unimodular locally compact group \(G\) of type \(I\), it is well-known that the Fourier algebra is isometrically isomorphic to the space \(L^1(\widehat{G})\) of operator fields with integrable trace class norm, via the Fourier inversion operator mapping an operator field \(F\) onto the function \(f\) via \[ f (x) = \int_{\widehat{G}} Tr[F(\pi) \pi(x)^*] d\mu(\pi)~. \] Here \(\mu\) denotes the Plancherel measure on \(\widehat{G}\). In the abelian case, Beurling algebras are obtained by considering functions arising from a weighted version of Fourier inversion, and the author presents an analogous construction for the nonabelian setting: Given a field of positive selfadjoint, not necessarily bounded, operators \((\widehat{p}(\pi))_{\pi \in \widehat{G}}\) with \(\widehat{p}(\pi) \geq I\) (identity operator), the author defines a space \(A_{\widehat{p}}(G)\) of functions \[ f(x) = \int_{\widehat{G}} Tr[\widehat{p}(\pi) F(\pi) \pi(x)^*] d\mu(\pi), \] for all \(f\) with \[ \| f \| _{\widehat{p}} := \int_{\widehat{G}} Tr| \widehat{p}(\pi) F(\pi)| d\mu(\pi) < \infty. \] The main result of the first half of the paper is the proof that with this norm, \(A_{\widehat{p}}(G)\) becomes a Banach space. The question when this space is also an algebra seems to be open. In the second half of the paper, the author presents analogous results for a particular class of non-unimodular groups, and comments shortly on relations to the weak uncertainty principle.
