The Cauchy problem for the nonlinear system of two wave equations \[ u_{tt}-\triangle u=-f_1(| u| ^2,| v| ^2)u,\quad v_{tt}-\triangle v=-f_2(| u| ^2,| v| ^2)v, \] for which there exists a function \(F\) such that \(\nabla F(\lambda ,\mu )=(f_1(\lambda ,\mu ),f_2(\lambda ,\mu )),\) is dealt with. Under some assumptions on \(F\) the Morawetz-Pokhozhaev delation identity is deduced and non-concentration of potential energy at any point is proved. Combining this with an improved time-space estimate similar to that presented in the article by \textit{J. Shatah} and \textit{M. Struwe} [Ann. Math. (2) 138, 503--518 (1993; Zbl 0836.35096)] the authors obtain global smooth solutions of the problem.
