Let \(Q\) be a~Dynkin or cyclic quiver with vertex set \(I=\{1,\ldots,n\}\), and let \(\Omega\) be the set of all words on the alphabet \(I\). Let \(\Lambda_Q\) denotes the set of isoclasses of finite dimensional nilpotent representations of \(Q\). The authors introduce and investigate the generic extension graph of a~Dynkin or a~cyclic quiver \(Q\) and compare this graph with crystal graph for the quantized enveloping algebra associated with \(Q\). The main tool using in this paper for this investigations are two maps \(p_Q,\kappa_Q:\Omega\to \Lambda_Q\). The first map is induced by generic extensions and the second by Kashiwara operators. The description of \(\kappa_Q\) is a~hard problem. In particular the fibres of \(\kappa_Q\) are not known. The fibre of \(p_Q\) is described as those words \(\omega=i_1\ldots i_m\in\Omega\) which define the same generic extension \(S_{i_1}\ast\ldots\ast S_{i_m}\) of simple modules \(S_{i_1},\ldots, S_{i_m}\). The authors show that in general \(\kappa_Q\neq p_Q\), but always \(\kappa_Q(\omega)\leq p_Q(\omega)\) for all \(\omega\in \Omega\), where \(\leq\;\equiv\;\leq_{deg}\) is the partial order on \(\Lambda_Q\) given by degenerations. It is proved that, if \(Q\) is a~finite or infinite linear quiver, then \(\kappa_Q^{-1}(\lambda)\cap p_Q^{-1}(\lambda)\neq\emptyset\) for all \(\lambda\in\Lambda_Q\). This property fails if \(Q\) is a~cyclic quiver (a~counter example is given).
