The notion of algebraic cobordism \(MGL\) represented by the Thom spectrum in the framework of \(\mathbb{A}^1\)-homotopy theory was introduced by \textit{V. Voevodsky} [Doc. Math., J DMV, Extra Vol. ICM, Berlin 1998, Vol. I, 579--604 (1998; Zbl 0907.19002)] for the proof of the Milnor conjecture. He also linked this theory to the classical complex cobordism \(MU\) via the complex topological realization map. From the other hand side, sending a scheme to its étale topological type, constructed by Artin-Mazur and Friedlander, gives naturally rise to cohomology theories. In this way \textit{E. M. Friedlander} defined a first version of an étale topological \(K\)-theory [Invent. Math. 60, 105--134 (1980; Zbl 0519.14010); Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér., IV. Sér. 231--256 (1982; Zbl 0537.14011)]. In the paper under review the author constructs an étale topological cobordism theory following Friedlander's ideas. Namely, he considers the profinite completion of Friedlander's étale topological type functor with values in the category of simplicial profinite stes. Then using the results of Hovey and Morel he constructs a stable homotopy category for simplicial profinite sets for any fixed prime number \(\ell\). As a consequence he defines general cohomology theories such as étale (Morava) \(K\)-theory and étale cobordism \(\hat{MU}\) as the theories represented by the respective profinite spectra. An advantage of this approach is the immediate construction of an Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence for smooth schemes over a field starting from étale cohomology and converging to étale cobordism with finite coefficients. For the comparison with Voevodsky's \(MGL\), he provides an étale realization of the stable motivic homotopy category of \(\mathbb{P}^1\)-spectra and proves that similar to the result of \textit{R. W. Thomason} [Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. 18, 437--552 (1985; Zbl 0596.14012)] concerning étale \(K\)-theory, the algebraic cobordism \(MGL\) with \(\mathbb{Z}/\ell\)-coefficients agrees with its étale counterpart \(\hat{MU}\) after inverting the Bott element.
