Let \(C\) be a smooth proper curve of genus \(g\geq 2\) over the complex numbers, and \(M\) be the moduli space of parameterizing isomorphism classes of stable vector bundles on \(C\) of rank \(r\) and degree \(d\), with fixed determinant. The Picard group of this moduli space was computed by \textit{J.-M. Drezet} and \textit{M. S. Narasimham} [Invent. Math. 97, No.~1, 53--94 (1989; Zbl 0689.14012)]: it is an infinity cyclic group. The authors now compute the Brauer group of the moduli space: It turns out that this group is cyclic of order \(n\), where \(n\) is the greatest common divisor of the rank \(r\) and the degree \(d\). Moreover, a generator for this group is the gerbe of obstructions against the existence of a universal bundle. This is also the restriction of the universal projective bundle on \(M\times C\), restricted to the fiber over a point of the curve \(C\).
