Let \((R,m)\) be a local, complete domain and \(v:R\to {\mathbb Z}\cup \{ \infty \} \) a valuation that is positive on \(m\); such \(v\) exists and two such maps \(v\) are bounded by constant multiples of each other. Let \(A\) be a subring of \(R^+\) containing \(R\) (\(R^+\) is the absolute integral closure; it is the integral closure of \(R\) is a fixed algebraic closure of the quotient field of \(R\)). This paper deals with the question: Are \(H^0_m(A),\dots ,H^{\dim(A)-1}_m(A)\) almost zero in the sense that every element of such an module is annihilated by an element of \(A\) that has arbitrarily small \(v\)-order? It is shown that this question is related to the homological conjectures, in particular to Heitmann's proof of the Direct Summand Conjecture for rings of dimension three. Two examples of local cohomology modules are presented where such annihilators of small order exist. A theorem is proven which shows that such annihilators of small order exist in a slightly different sense (\(R^+\) is replaced by a graded subring of \(R^+\)).
