Nielsen-Schreier varieties of algebras over an arbitrary field have the property that every subalgebra of a free algebra is free again. The automorphisms of finitely generated free algebras in such varieties are tame and there is an algorithm which decomposes every automorphism as a product of elementary automorphisms. The most important examples are the varieties of all Lie algebras, all nonassociative algebras, and all commutative (or all anticommutative) nonassociative algebras. In the paper under review the author describes a set of defining relations for automorphism groups of finitely generated free algebras of Nielsen-Schreier varieties defined by homogeneous systems of polynomial identities. (Over an infinite base field every variety has this property.) In particular, this gives a representation of the automorphism groups of free Lie algebras by generators and defining relations. The proof uses essentially ideas from the recent remarkable paper by the same author [\textit{U. U. Umirbaev}, J. Reine Angew. Math. 600, 203--235 (2006; Zbl 1132.14051)] where he gives the defining relations of the group of tame automorphisms of the polynomial algebra \(F[x,y,z]\) in three variables over a field \(F\) of characteristic 0.
