The author derives a new exact boundary condition on the surface of a sphere for the time-dependent Maxwell equations. It is local in space and time and involves first order time derivatives and second order tangential derivatives of the electromagnetic field and of certain auxiliary functions. The number of these functions can be chosen such that the error introduced by the artifical boundary remains below the discretization error inside the sphere. Because the new boundary condition provides an analytic expression for evaluating the field outside the sphere it is advantageous for far-field evaluations and multiple scattering problems.
