The authors generalize the Feichtinger-Gröchenig theory of constructing frames via square integrable group representations. This theory is well-established for functions on the Euclidean plane but cannot be directly applied to functions on compact manifolds, since the corresponding group representations are not square integrable. The variant proposed by the authors for this case exploits factorization out of a suitable subgroup to work with the coset sets. Most part of the survey paper under consideration is devoted to the description of the basics of the theory developed by the authors and applications to the construction of Gabor frames and associated modular spaces on \(n\)-spheres.
