The paper is concerned with spectral properties of the one-dimensional Schrödinger operator \[ H=-\frac{d}{d x^{2}}+V(x) \] with potential of the form \[ V(x)=\alpha^{2}(x)\widetilde{V}(\alpha(x)x), \] where \(\widetilde{V}(x)\) is a real-valued periodic function, \(\alpha\in C(\mathbb{R})\), \(0 < \alpha (x) < 1\) (\(x \in \mathbb{R}\)), and \(\alpha(x)\to 1\) as \(| x|\to\infty.\) The author describes conditions under which the essential spectrum of \(H\) coincides with the spectrum of the corresponding Schrödinger operator \(\widetilde{H}\) with the potential \(\widetilde{V}(x)\). The discrete spectrum of \(H\) in spectral gaps of the essential spectrum is also studied.
