Let \({\mathcal I}\) be an operator ideal and \(T \in {\mathcal L}(E,F)\) be a linear and bounded operator between Banach spaces \(E\) and \(F\). The outer measure \(\gamma_{{\mathcal I}}(T)\) and the inner measure \(\beta_{{\mathcal I}}(T)\) provide appropriate measures for the deviation of \(T\) from \({\mathcal I}\) whenever \({\mathcal I}\) is closed and either surjective (e.g., the ideal of strictly cosingular operators) or injective (e.g., the ideal of strictly singular operators), respectively, or both (e.g., the ideals of compact operators, weakly compact operators, Rosenthal operators, Banach-Saks operators and Asplund operators). For the ideal of compact operators, these measures coincide with the standard measure of non-compactness. The authors investigate the deviation of an interpolated operator between abstract \(K\)- and \(J\)-spaces, respectively, from a given operator ideal by establishing formulae for the ideal measure of the interpolated operator in terms of the ideal measures of restrictions of the operator. Formulae are given in terms of the norms of the shift operators on \(\Gamma\), where the latter is the sequence space associated to the abstract \(K\)- and \(J\)-spaces. The formulae in the case when one of the Banach couples involved reduces to a single Banach space only depend on the outer and the inner measure, whereas in the general case a third measure \(\eta_{{\mathcal I}}\), derived from the above measures in a canonical way, has to be introduced. The results give quantitative versions of previously known qualitative results and generalize recently established logarithmically convex inequalities for the classical real interpolation method.
