The following problem is solved: Describe all volume preserving mappings on a finite-dimensional real vector space \(V\); that is, find all \(T:V\to V\) such that, for all \(V_1,\dots, V_n\) in \(V\): \[ | \det (TV_1,\dots, TV_n)| =| \det(V_1,\dots,V_n)| \] where \(n\) is the dimension of \(V\) and det denotes a determinant function on \(V\). The authors show that all such mappings are linear.
