The authors establish a localization result for the equivariant \(K\)-theory family index of a family of twisted spin Dirac operators endowed with a \(S^1\) action trivial on the base. This generalizes to families the result of Atiyah-Hirzebruch on the vanishing of the index of the Dirac operator on manifolds with a non-trivial \(S^1\) action. They use this theorem to prove several rigidity and vanishing results of the equivariant index of some elliptic operators related to elliptic genera. Here rigidity means that \(S^1\) acts trivially on the index class. Some of the results of this paper were announced by \textit{K.~Liu, X.~Ma} and \textit{W.~Zhang} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I, Math. 330, No. 4, 301--305 (2000; Zbl 0951.55008)].
