A surface in \(\mathbb R^{2n}\) is called isotropic if the restriction of the standard symplectic form of \(\mathbb R^{2n}\) to it vanishes. The object of study are surfaces minimizing area among isotropic surfaces. A natural notion of weak solutions for this kind of problem is that of stationary isotropic maps of class \(W^{1,2}\). \textit{R. Schoen} and \textit{J. Wolfson} [J. Differ. Geom. 58, 1--86 (2001; Zbl 1052.53056)] have proved that a Lagrangian map from a \(2\)-dimensional disk to \(\mathbb R^4\) (or more general a \(4\)-dimensional Kähler manifold) is a branched immersion away from a finite set of points. In the paper under review, this is extended to higher co-dimension, that is maps of the disc to \(\mathbb R^{2n}\). The focus is on the Plateau problem. Existence of \(W^{1,2}\) minimizers is proven by standard arguments. The most work goes into partial regularity. Again, smoothness in the interior away from finitely many points is proven. The proof uses excess-decay estimates and dimension reduction via classification of tangent cones. Even the higher regularity is an interesting question in this setting and requires a technical proof.
