The author compares the one-dimensional gravitational system with ``uniform'' random initial data with the additive coalescent, which is a mathematical object that describes the evolution of the masses in a system of clusters, where each pair of clusters with mass \(m(i)\) and \(m(j)\), merges as a single cluster with mass \(m(i)+m(j)\), at rate \(m(i)+m(j)\) independently of the other pairs. Besides, the author considers an infinite system, which is closely related with Smoluchowski additive and multiplicative equations.
