A reaction-diffusion system is studied which describes the aggression of calcium carbonate (marble) by sulphure dioxide. The problem, formulated in one space dimension, is reduced to an initial boundary value problem for a parabolic equation with a history-dependent term. A global existence and uniqueness theorem is proved in the framework of a weak formulation and the solution is shown to be classical if the data are in a suitable Hölder class.
