A real algebraic variety \(X\) is called \(M\)-variety if the total mod \(2\) Betti number of the real point set of \(X\) is equal to the total mod \(2\) Betti number of the complexification of \(X\). The author studies the canonical homomorphism of the algebraic cohomology group of the set of real points into the algebraic cohomology group of of the set of complex points and gives estimates of the dimension of the kernel of this homomorphism. In the final part of the paper some interesting examples are presented.
