The author considers a theorem on similarity between a perturbation of a compact normal operator \(A\) and some operator \(A_1\) that commutes with \(A\) [see Theorem 2 on p. 2453 of \textit{N. Dunford} and \textit{J. T. Schwartz}, Linear operators, vol. III (1971; Zbl 0243.47001)]. Several extensions are obtained. In particular, the assumption on simplicity of the eigenvalues of \(A\) is dropped. Moreover, two kinds of perturbation are studied: the ones that are confined to the Hilbert-Schmidt class, and the more general perturbations by compact operators. In each of the two cases, explicit formulae for computing \(A_1\), the similarity between \(A_1\) and \(A\), as well as the bound \(\varepsilon(A)=\varepsilon\) of perturbation are given. A finer analysis of \(A_1\) is obtained for some special types of perturbation. As a consequence, the author gives some estimates on perturbed eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The paper concludes with the following inverse problem. If the estimates on the coefficients of the Fourier series expansion of eigenvectors of the perturbed operator are given, relative to the unperturbed eigenvectors, what characteristics does the perturbation have?
