A closed Jordan curve \(\Gamma\) in the complex plane can be approximated by lemniscates \(L(P_n,r):=\{z: | P_n(z)| =r\}\) generated by polynomials \(P_n\). The author obtains upper bounds for the least deviations \(H_n(\Gamma)\) in the Hausdorff metric, of the curve \(\Gamma\) from the lemniscates generated by polynomials \(P_n\) of a given degree \(n\). The upper bounds are given in terms of the moduli of smoothness of the conformal mapping of the exterior of \(\Gamma\) to the exterior of the unit disc and its inverse, and of the Green's function for the exterior of \(\Gamma\). As a corollary the author obtains for analytic curves the order \(H_n(\Gamma)=O(q^n)\) as \(n\to \infty\) with \(0\leq q =q(\Gamma)<1\).
