The results of the paper under review concerns the Lichnerowicz-Obata conjecture: Let a connected Lie group \(G\) act on a complete connected Riemannian manifold \((M^{n},g)\) of dimension \(n \geq 2\) by projective transformations. Then it acts by affine transformations (i.e., the action of the group preserves the Levi-Civita connection), or \(g\) has constant nonnegative curvature. More precisely, the \(2\)-dimensional case of that conjecture is considered. The main result of the paper is the following theorem: Let a connected Lie group \(G\) act on a complete connected Riemannian surface \((M^{2},g)\) by projective transformations. Then it acts by isometries, or \(g\) has constant nonnegative curvature. Recently, the author also proved the multidimensional version of the Lichnerowicz-Obata conjecture [see \textit{V. S. Matveev}, J. Differ. Geom. 75, 459--502 (2007; Zbl 1115.53029)].
