Boundary value problems, eigenvalue problems and initial boundary value problems for a second-order self-adjoint elliptic operator (2D Hamiltonian operator) are considered. The semi-discrete Galerkin method for the space approximation of the form \[ c_1(x_1)\chi_1(x_1, x_2)+\cdots+ c_N(x_1)\chi_N(x_1, x_2), \] where \(\chi_1,\dots, \chi_N\) are some basis functions and \(c_1,\dots, c_N\) are unknown coefficients is used. For the corresponding approximate problems the existence and uniqueness of a solution and its bounds, the positive definiteness of the related forms and other properties are analyzed. For a specific physically reasonable choice of the basic functions \(\chi_1,\dots,\chi_N\) error bounds of arbitrarily high-order for all listed problems are derived. Some of the most challenging problem of contemporary nuclear physic such as e.g. the description of large amplitude collective motion in the atomic model and large-scale collective oscillation and fission remains can be effectively solved by the proposed method.
