The authors show that two optimization methods for the scattering problem for the reduced wave equation are duals of each other. Both methods use a test domain \(G\) and find approximations to the scattered wave in \({\mathcal R}^m \backslash G\). One method involves finding the source on the unit sphere giving the fundamental solution on \(\partial G\) and using that to compute the scattered wave. In the other method one finds the source on \(\partial G\) which produces the far-field solution and uses that source to calculate the scattered wave. In each of these methods the calculation of the source is done by least squares with Tikhonov regularization.
