Let \(M\) be a complex Riemannian manifold and assume that \(\sum\) is a Riemann surface. Let \({\mathcal L}(M)\) denote the space of conformally invariant first-order Lagrangian densities for maps \({\mathbb C}\rightarrow M\). The main result of this paper establishes that, if \(S\subset C^\infty (\sum ,M)\), then \({\mathcal T}(S)\subset {\mathcal L}(M)'\) (for the notations see the paper itself) has compact closure if and only if \(S\) has bounded energy. This property implies that the closure of \({\mathcal T}(S)\) provides a compactification of the subset \(S\). In the last part of the present paper, the compactification obtained in this way is compared with the Gromov compactification in the case of \(J\)-holomorphic maps.
