The authors introduce the functional equation \[ f(2x+y)+f(x-2y)+4f(x)=3[f(x+y)+f(x-y)]+f(2y)-2f(y)\tag{1} \] and observe that its even solutions are quadratic mappings while the odd ones are additive. Generally, a mapping \(f: X\to Y\) (\(X,Y\) are real vector spaces) satisfies (1) if and only if it is of the form \[ f(x)=B(x,x)+A(x),\qquad x\in X \] where \(A: X\to Y\) is an additive mapping and \(B: X^2\to Y\) a symmetric bi-additive one. The main part of the paper is devoted to the stability of (1) in the case where the domain \(X\) is a quasi-normed space and the target space \(Y\) a \(p\)-Banach space. Denote by \(Df(x,y)\) the difference between the left hand side and the right hand side of (1). The main result states, roughly speaking, that if \(\|Df(x,y)\|\) is bounded by some control mapping \(\varphi(x,y)\) (satisfying suitable conditions) then there exist a unique quadratic function \(Q: X\to Y\) and a unique additive function \(A: X\to Y\) such that \(\|f(x)-Q(x)-A(x)\|\) can be estimated in terms of \(\varphi\). Other results are formulated for even and odd mappings \(f\). Several corollaries are formulated, in particular with the control mapping \(\varphi\) being of the form \(\varphi(x,y)=\theta(\|x\|^r+\|y\|^s)\).
