This extended text is the fifth paper in the series on transfer matrices and partition functions zeros for antiferromagnetic Potts models (for Part IV, see [\textit{J. L. Jacobsen} and the first author, ibid. 122, No. 4, 705--760 (2006; Zbl 1149.82007)]). For the \(q\)-state Potts model on a regular lattice, the Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation enables the study of zeros of a partition function, the latter being signatures of phase transitions. The partition function on lattices can be efficiently computed by means of transfer matrices. In the preceding papers, symbolic transfer matrix methods were employed to study the square and triangular lattice chromatic polynomials for free, cylindrical, cyclic and toroidal boundary conditions. The Beraha-Kahane-Weiss theorem allowed to handle the infinite size (cylindrical) limit. Presently the cylinder diameter is being let to infinity. Some new structural results were obtained for transfer matrices with free and cylindrical boundary conditions. New explicit closed-form expressions are obtained for the dominant diagonal entry in the transfer matrix. The large q expansion of the bulk free energy is obtained as well. A list of open problems concludes the paper.
